Blackbird Has Landed

Blackbird Has Landed

Around here we called it Blackbird long before the finish left the booth.

Whirl-E-Bird launched in chrome because that's what fifty years of bid sheets asked for: a bright drum on the front of the cab, three heads spinning, motorists suddenly remembering they have a yield button. Chrome did the job. Chrome still does the job. Then the phone started doing what phones do.

“Got it in black?”
“Can it disappear into the cab?”
“We blacked out the whole truck and now the spinner looks like a hubcap at a funeral.”

Yes. The Blackbird is available.

Same Whirl-E-Bird. Same North Carolina build. Same late-1970s bolt pattern and wiring, so nobody has to invent a variance form because the housing decided to dress down. The only thing that changed is the paint, and, if you spec it the way most of you will, the way it sits in the cab. Official configuration puts the black housing on the surface mount: less jewelry on the face of the truck, more “how long has that been spinning?”

That is the point.

What you are not buying

You are not buying a different motor, a slower spin, or a “stealth edition” that forgot how to clear an intersection. Blackbird is not a trim package dreamed up in a meeting. It's the same sealed unit the chrome trucks have been shipping since December 2025:

  • Three LED heads, standard red / red / white (swap colors online if your state or your chief has opinions)
  • Brushless DC servo, HiViz-designed controller, five speeds, spin it either direction by flipping the motor leads
  • Soft-start, so the first revolution doesn't sound like the truck dropped a toolbox
  • Stainless gears and a slip ring instead of the folklore that used to live in these housings
  • Separate feeds for motor, reds, and white, because white-light cutout is not a personality trait
  • Optics that throw light off-axis without physically cocking the heads and turning the rotor into a washing machine

Chrome is the parade finish. Blackbird is what you spec when the rest of the cab already went dark.

How to order it without starting a committee

Tell the builder or the dealer: Whirl-E-Bird, black housing. Standard heads unless you need something else. Price is still $3,769. Size is still 16.3 × 16.3 × 12.7 inches and 17.3 pounds. Voltage is still 12 VDC. Average draw is still about 90 watts when it is doing the thing it was built to do.

Chrome surface-mount is not going anywhere. If your holes are already in the cab and you want the classic look, keep ordering that one. It still ships with the retrofit adapter plate. Blackbird is for the jobs that were waiting on a darker drum and a cleaner install.

Warranty is three years on the motor, power system, and gearing, plus Advanced Exchange on the heads: we send the new one first. You send the tired one back after it is off the truck. Designed and assembled in North Carolina by people who have a preferred spin direction and will still build yours the other way.

Where it lives

whirl-e-bird.com, 703-662-3458, or sales@hivizleds.com. Dealers and apparatus manufacturers who already quote Whirl-E-Bird can put Blackbird on the sheet. Media kit is at whirl-e-bird.com/media.

Internally it will stay Blackbird. On the truck it is still Whirl-E-Bird. On the road it is the same sweeping, hard-to-ignore front-mount spinner — just wearing the uniform the rest of the apparatus already put on.
